It is NOT a silly question. Females are in season for 3 wks. One wk coming in, one wk fertile, one wk going out. They come in season or heat 1-2x a yr. Some come in once a yr, some 2x a yr. Just depends.
first of all it's not a period it's an estrous cycle, more commonly referred to as being in heat.
a dog's heat cycle usually lasts 3 - 4 weeks. the first week or so she'll have a bloody discharge. during the middle stage the flow will lighten to an almost straw color. this is when she is fertile & will stand for males - don't let her out of your sight! in the last stage the flow will be bloody again.

then in about 2 months she may go through a false pregnancy. she'll gain weight & her teets may fill with milk. she may also adopt toys or household items as surrogate 'pups'. this usually only lasts a few days to a week. then about 6 weeks later - about the time any pups would be weaned - she'll blow her coat. you'll be amazed how much your girl will shed without going bald!
unless you have a "legitimate" reason to breed her, i would wait at least 2 months before having her spayed.

Generally, female dog complete heat cycle is around six months where there are two cycles a year. But there will be exceptions where some dogs will complete their heat cycles within four months and this will let the dog encounter more cycles per year.
