it really depends on the person, and what's going on in their mouth. Maybe a half a year, a year, year and a half, it really depends on the person. Your orthodontist should be telling you.
My orthodontist told me forever actually....but i stopped wearing mine after 11 years, and my teeth have shifted a little bit, but nothing too bad to make it look like i've never had braces.

Edit: sorry I never answered the question on average...I'd say at least 5 years. But hey, the longer the better...i had mine in for 11 years and my teeth still shifted after i stopped wearing them. So I guess it's your call.

I've heard you should wear it for at least a year, but as soon as you stop, your teeth will move. The longer you wear it the better. I stopped wearing mine and my teeth moved, not too much but enough to bother me.
