The main Jazz Clarinetist of the last 40 years is Eddie Daniels. He took funk, rock, jazz, swing, and Latin styles and brought it to the clarinet. He played tenor sax with Freddie Hubbard, in the early 70's and decided to give the sax a rest and concentrate on the pyrotechnical demands of the clarinet.Well, some 40 years later he has succeeded! He is not the only one, let us not forget Paquito De Rivera. The term Smooth Jazz is not really Jazz, but Contemporary Instrumental R&B. Real Jazz is about Swinging, and Improvising over standard 32 bar song form changes.(Or most commonly 12 bar or altered blues forms. Smooth Jazz just plays simple grooves over and over, with basic pentatonic soloing (Like blues Jams).Many sax players double on Clarinet, but with a more traditional approach.
