I have been playing with the Fuji S5. Trying to find the limits of this new sensor. So far I like the camera. It's basically a D200. Same lenses, flash, autofocus, etc. It has a slower frame rate than the D200 but the buffer is big enough. The menu system is also very different than on the Nikon. I am getting used to it but it will take some time. The good news it that the controls are well laid out so that you rarely need go into the menus anyway.

I decided to push the limits of the camera and try a backlit shot in the shade, no fill flash. This is the shot directly out of the camera. Ya, I know the grass needs cutting but lawn mowers have to wait when there are cameras to be played with.:angel:

I purposely picked the highest contrast situation I could find. The subject is under the shade of a tree and strongly back lit at 5pm in the afternoon in southern Texas.
I think the sky is slightly beyond the limit of the sensor. The sky measured 3 stops over the top end of the exposure. Fuji says that you are only good for 2 stops over. You can start to see some artifacts around the edges of the trees in the background. This may also be a form of lens flare as you can see it in the original picture as well. The colors are also a little saturated for my liking. The colors seem to pop when you bring in the second set of pixels. I need to play more with this. Processing RAW files from this camera is very different than other cameras. The sliders react differently with the wide dynamic range.
Anyways, back to playing.:)
I am enjoying your before and after photos. That is really good that your able to fix those shots.
thats pretty impressive. and it also shows one of those situations where you could save a shot with it. its almost like the sensor has built in HDR...
