  • I'm 17 and live in a hick town, I've become fascinated with the world of tattooing, and I aspire to be an artist, not just a flash artist. I've been developing my skills with pen and paper, and I do a ton of temporary tattoos on people just with sharpies. Are there any professionals around here that can give me some tips on landing an apprenticeship, or spread some knowledge on maybe some less known areas of tattooing and what the career entails?

  • I'm a licensed artist myself and here is a few good steps in the right direction: This is a competetive field so you won't find alot of local help. Go online and order a decent machine and power supply, nothing extravagant just a little starter gun, and some needles, tubes, and a few inks. Then talk to your local butcher to get some pig ears. Freeze them and take out one a day to thaw, working on this is going to teach you what actual skin MIGHT do. You need to practice simple clean lines with consistant width, working with bright light you can see the depth of your marks by holding up the ear to the light to gauge the line. Actual skin has always been different with every client in my experience. Practice, practice, and practice some more. True artists have been at it for decades.

And DON'T touch anybody but yourself, it is very illegal to tattoo without a license. Getting licensed is pretty easy depending on your states regulations. Call the Health Department for info on that. Good Luck

  • Such cold, boring indifference to my lighthearted question... "Tis the season to be jolly (although a sense of humor should be a year round thing). Good luck with that first "best answer"...any day now.

What tipped you from just "allways wanting a tattoo" to actually going and getting one, and what did you get?
