How do you feel about Gay Marriage?

  • First, I want to honestly say I don't know how I feel about it.

Here's a few of my thoughts and I would like to hear some pro/com view points.

    Pro:

I really hate that if a person loves someone the government say's they can't marry...there just seems something wrong with that!

Marriage Benefits: Visits in hospitals, I can't imagine if I was told I couldn't visit my sick wife...in fact I would be outraged.

Medical benefits: Sarah Palin voted in Alaska to allow gay couples working for the State to receive benefits as are traditional married people...yet she is against gay marriage

The "None of Our Business Factor" It seems reasonable that many may feel that their marriage choices are "theirs" and theirs alone. I understand that.

Con: Many people I know and respect say that marriage that was invented by God was for a man & woman as found in the bible. And that the very meaning of marriage defined means between a man & a woman..if we allow this it will cause more disease and will open the door for people to even marry animals (dogs/cats etc....in other words if we open the "everything goes" door it will be a door that will never be shut again. Even Sen Obama has made strong comments on gay marriage

    your thoughts please

  • I am very much pro to gay marriage... To the Cons I can only say a few things:
What marriage was born for doesn't matter...peanut butter was invented to be glue, you know? What it is now-that's what matters. It's the symbol of eternal love and union between to persons. why wouldn't gays be allowed to have that? GIving gay people the same rights as married people would still be unfair... marriage is a special bond that people-whoever they are- want and should be able to have. Secondly, about the cat and dog thing. Are you comparing gays to animals, by any chance? We don't want bestiality to be allowed. We never asked for that. We just want PEOPLE to be allowed to love each other. What's the big difference, huh? After all you can marry the person you love, why can't I? I never asked to marry my pet snake.

  • I'm all for gay marriage, i really don't see anything wrong with it

  • I think everyone should be allowed to marry as they see fit. As long as they are adults, who really cares, I don't. It is so arrogant of the law makers to interpret the bible and enforce that belief on all of society.

  • If we take religion out of the equation it's a union between 2 people that express their vows and/or commitment. Whether it be between straights or gays it really should not matter and really it doesn't. Of course there is a legal point of view as well as a religious one. Since society as a whole functions on these 2 elements it becomes a debate and sometimes if not many times loses it's essence of what a union is really all about. But because of legal and religious laws in certain countries people lose sight and it becomes a moral mind set and people (minorities) are treated differently instead of it being equal for everyone.

  • Well i believe the government shouldn't be able to tell you who yor happy with. I think whatever you do in your bedroom is your problem and nobody else should even care. if two gay people feel as though they love each other enough to get married then i think they should get married and no one should be able to tell them they can't

  • Equality does not mean "anything goes". Equality means just that: equal rights, as in Liberty, Freedom, and the Pursuit of Happiness, which is supposed to be what this country is all about. YES to same sex marriage.

  • My thoughts... We're asking for equal rights, plain and simple.

  • I'm very lucky to live in a country where same-sex unions are allowed, and I am afforded the same rights as straight couples.

And I'm also very lucky to have been able to take advantage of the change in law here and very happy to have recently celebrated my second anniversary.

It's not called Marriage. "Marriage" is defined by law and the church as the union of one man and one woman. But as a atheist, I couldnt give a stuff about the church's view and cant get hung up on the titles as long as the meaning is the same

  • Not everyone is Christian, and it's only subscribers of those beliefs who should be subject to them. Marriage, meanwhile, is something that is recognised by law, and as such has no business being applied or denied via religion inspired discrimination.

Also, what's up with the "anything goes" argument? How on Earth does granting all humans equal right to marry each other lead to people marry their pet rabbits? That's just ridiculous.

  • When man and woman live together without getting "married" for X amount of years.. after 2 years their relationship is then deemed as "A Defacto Marriage" yet neither took vows or pledges.

Origins of Marriage by "Christian" standards are the union of Man and Woman, traditionally, and it was sanctified by "God" in a place of worship ie: church. Because of this, rather than "Married" since apparently this would indicate that it was sanctified, Civil Union is the exact same thing, just without the religious undertones.

There should be no relationship between politics and religion so there should be no need for state legislation to say "You can't get married because your lifestyle goes against this or that belief."

Funny thing about Fundamentalist thinking is, they always think the worst of humans, and while there are some people who do warrant this kind of hysteria, the way they put their point across is, this like "Marrying animals" will happen in masses.
There are people who are very much in love with their pets, who give their pets more attention and love than some of their families, by their definition (fundamentalists that is) "these" people are pretty much married to their pets.

  • I think gay people should have the same rights and benefits concerning marriage as straight people. I've also heard that allowing gay marriage will open the door for more disease and the whole disgusting animal thing. That's ridiculous. How can recognizing a relationship as a pact and union between two people who love each other do anything but encourage more monogamy? Let's face it, if we still thought of marriage as it's explained in the bible there wouldn't be a 50% divorce rate and all marriage would actually be "until death do us part". The way I see it, us straight people have screwed up the sanctity of marriage so who are we to say who can or can't marry. The hypocrisy of some people makes me crazy. Some of the people so against gay marriage haven't kept the vows they made or would file for divorce at the first sign of unhappiness - yet they will yap about how marriage is such a sacred thing between a man and woman.

  • I have many gay friends and they are more put together than most straight people. I don't care what the bible says...or other peoples input. I am straight by the way.....and I think if you love someone you should be able to marry them and have the same rights as a married couple. What should be illegal is divorce. I hate when people get married thinking if it doesn't work out they will simply get a divorce....that's not right!!!

  • marriage isn't strictly a religious act anymore, even atheists get married. so we shouldn't base our decisions on it with religion. people can follow religion if they want to, but shouldn't enforce it onto other people.

as for marrying animals, it's stupid to consider because animals can't sign legal contracts -_-

and please explain how gays getting married will cause diseases ...

    i'm obviously for gay marriage

  • Hi,
Firstly I'm sick of the "people can marry animals if we allow gay marriage" thing-it's highly offensive to compare two consenting loving adults to animals.
As far as the "bible" argument is concerned-I don't see where the bible fits into legal matters. That is basically making religion mandatory, which takes away my rights to believe what I want.

  • Stuff and nonsense, they're my views on gay marriage, or at least the furore about it. It's just marriage, that's all, the joining of two people. Being gay should not even be a factor.
Any argument that uses religion is lost instantly. God created no-one, nature and evolution did that and they created homosexual people and animals too, life evolves all the time and we exist for a reason. I've yet to see an argument against gay marriage that doesn't mention the Bible or God, it's a bit sad that in order to support their own hatred some people have to rely on text written hundreds of years ago and grossly mistranslated.

  • I'm all for gay marriage. All the pros you listed are very good. As for the cons...it certainly won't cause MORE disease, as gays will now be even More encouraged to remain monogamous and saying gay marriage is tantamount to accepting bestiality is just ridiculous!

  • I am for it. I am in no position to deny someone the right to love, whether it be the same or opposite sex. People are lucky to find someone they can relate to, love, and want to spend every morning with.

There are more pressing matters at hand than worrying about if same sex couples want to marry.

  • i agree with it. However, i dont agree it should be called marriage. Prehaps a 'union of two people' or something like that because the term marriage translates to a union of a man and a women. I think that they should get the same benefits are married people, because if they have chosen that person as their life partner who are we to punish them? Finally to all these narrow minded people out there who don't beleive in anything like this, i simply ask, if that was your son or daughter and they had the love of their life, would you stop them then?
Being gay is becoming accepted in the community these days, so we should stop hiding under a rock and let these people live the way they want and give them the same support and respect as what married people get.

  • I am gay but I oppose gay marriage. Why should we be as miserable as the straights?!?

Seriously - I think gay couples could apply for civil unions and be afforded all the exact same benefits as straight married couples - but demanding gay marriage is an attack against the church and our traditional institutions in this country and if we want people on our side on this one sensitive matter, we need to work with the church, to let the church lead the way. Otherwise with our extreme radicalism we will drive away even those thoughtful moderates pre-disposed to supporting our position.
