No more than the NBA or NFL. If you want the top talent to make things happen you must pay for it--and make the equity a sizable chunk of the incentive. Billion dollar brain power ain't cheap and is quite rare. That's why efforts like barnesandnoble.com could benefit from a CDnow-N2K pickup game as well.

Yahoo! (NASDAQ:YHOO) reportedly filed a $2 million lawsuit against Shopping.com (NASDAQ:IBUY) for breach of contract. No details. The two had entered an ad and promotion deal this past June.
Zapata (NYSE:ZAP) wants back in the Internet game after its much-publicized first time strikeout at bat a few months ago. Zap then had planned to roll a bunch of smaller Websites into Zap.com and "take on Yahoo." A flurry of press releases and grandstanding by the CEO failed to produce much of anything but hype. So Zapata pulled the plug even before the juice started to flow. Now Zapata plans on reviving its Internet efforts. It has the capital we think, maybe it can do better the second time around, having learned from its mistakes?
ZDNet is about to cash up with an IPO as the parent magazine company wants to spin off the Internet division, in an effort to take advantage of better valuations for Internet firms. The SEC document doesn't say but if ZD wants to raise $115 million we estimate they may be seeking about a $500 million IPO valuation for ZDnet. That's about 10x annualized revenues, consistent with peers in the same traffic and revenue group in our opinion.
Shares of recent Internet IPOs find more favor today as Web developer site EarthWeb (NASDAQ:EWBX), directory provider Infospace (NASDAQ:INSP) and communities theglobe.com (NASDAQ:TGLO) and XOOM.com (NASDAQ:XMCM) all pop between 18% to 30% today.
