During the 90s, the Peabody and Emmy Award-winning television series The X-Files was considered the pinnacle of science fiction and conspiracy theory storytelling, with a sprawling mythology that helped earn its place as one of the Fox networks heaviest hitters. With its recent acquisition of producer J. J. Abrams new show concept titled Fringe, the network is seemingly set on backing a potential all-new science fiction hit in the same vein. According to a report from Reuters, Fringe was the central target of an intense bidding war for ownership and production rights in Hollywood during the past few months, with Fox coming out the victor and taking hold of the property.

Bad Robot Productions, a company owned by Abrams, is set to start shooting and producing the pilot episode at Warner Brothers studios. Fringe is being backed with a budget of $10 million, making it comparable to the amount being spent on Lost. The new show also represents a break in a long line of historic partnerships between Abrams and his standard network ABC, on series such as Alias, What About Brian, and Six Degrees. But on the other hand theres also the newly announced show Boundaries between ABC and Abrams, which is penned by Jill Soloway, a writer for Six Feet Under.

Fringe is a creation that stems from the collaboration between Abrams and the scriptwriters for the summer blockbuster film Transformers, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, and theyve stated that the main plot will be about the darker side and dangers of science. According to Orci, science can be both enlightening and frightening simultaneously, with the ability for destruction as well as positive advancement. In a premise similar to The X-Files, the new show will focus on an FBI agent who is looking into an abrupt surge in paranormal activity.
