history is time, right? So... there was time before time...???
I just don't understand that one.
You are absolutely right that there cannot have been a time that was "before time," but the word "history" refers more to man-made chronicles of time rather than time itself. History could best be divided into eras labeled Modern History, Ancient History, and Prehistory, meaning time recently chronicled, time chronicled long ago, and time not chronicled to our knowledge. The term "prehistoric" refers to an era prior to recorded history.
Strictly speaking "historic" is confined to the time that written records are available. Pre-historic is restricted to the study of time before writing was developed.
