Virginia 4-H Programs - Careers and Economic Education:: Animal Science. Citizenship. Communications and Expressive Arts Programs in each of these three areas are managed by the Careers and Economic http://www.ext.vt.edu/resources/4h/careers.htmlHOME | i am looking around still at possible careers for me. i would love a careers where i can be with animals or get to learn about different cultures.
as for animal careers i was wondering if u could tell me what u did and y u pick this careers. i am looking for a career dealing with animals that do not deal with being a vet or a vet tech (no offense to those who are.). other than those what are some other careers that mainly deal with animal.
also it would be a bonus if this careers has some type of traveling in it.
I work as a wildlife biologist and I specialize in ornithology (the study of birds). I work as a field biologist, meaning I spend most of my time outdoors collecting data. I mainly study endangered and declining bird species, but we also do some work with other endangered animals such as bats, reptiles and amphibians, fish, and do a lot of invasive plant removal. I have always been passionate about animals..ever since I was a little girl and have always known I wanted to work with animals. I did previously work as a vet tech and as a zookeeper, but somehow I felt those jobs were not helping animals enough. I wanted to actually save them in the wild. This career can have LOTS of traveling if you want it to. I have worked in 16 states and 2 countries studying birds. I have since settled down to a full time permanent position. I still do a lot of traveling locally..I usually drive anywhere from 50-150 miles a day to get to various study sites. I'm into monkey business
I'm still in education but I'm in Zoology/Animal Behaviour. I did my BSc. in Marine Biology and Zoology and am doing my Masters in Animal Behaviour and Welfare. My aim is to work in research, preferably on behaviour and the best case scenario for me would be studying the behaviour of large bodied and maybe social predators, wolves, African hunting dogs, hyena, dolphins, that sort of thing but that's unlikely to happen at any point soon anyway but I'd be happy with anything that deals with behaviour really. I did a great internship with Mote Marine Lab a few months back looking at the behaviour of juvenile bottlenose dolphins and that was awesome, I would love to do that for a living, as I said unlikely to happen any time soon but that would be my idea of an ideal job and something I actually have experience with so I can tell you what we did: basically we went out with the boat as often as the weather permitted, looked for dolphins and if we found our focal animals (the one the study was on) we would focus on one and follow it for upto 2 hours recording it's behaviour as well as environmental factors, when we got back to the lab the GPS data had to be downloaded, equipment cleaned etc. made for some long days but it was great. Bad weather was all about data entry and double checking entered data, running some preliminary analyses on the data to look at who liked to associate with who, tried to do photo identification for dolphins we had seen but did not know, plotted sighting maps, cleaned and scraped off barnacles off equipment/boats, the list goes on....
The more realistic outcome is studying animals in labs, say schooling behaviour or sexual preference in guppies, you could for example put a guppy in an arena (filled with water obviously) which has a perspex tube (so the other one can see them but they cannot move far) with 2 guppies at one end and one guppy at the other end and record where he goes, then analyse the data and write up a report on it.
Of course the jobs you first get in this career rarely allow you to do your own research and you may spend a lot of time as a lab tech to begin with, getting your dream job is difficult because there is a lot of competition but I thought it was worth a try anyway, better to try and achieve your dream and fail than not trying at all in my opinion!
Be aware though, most research orientated jobs, even if they deal with animals, will not be 'hands on' as it would be for example if you worked in animal care. Research is very hands off with strict limitations on interactions with your research subjects. You may or may not travel, a lot of scientists I know at the very least go to conferences abroad, for example South Africa, but of course these people are quite far on in their career...
