I'm looking for an actual business plan (not a template) for a
residential waste removal company. In other words, the business plan
that Waste Management (www.wm.com) or Waste Connections
(www.wasteconnections.com) would have written early on - or, the
business plan that either of these two companies would now find
attractive as an acquisition target some day in the future.
Ideally, I would like to find a plan that was used to actually raise
money from angels or from bankers. Or, on the other end of the
spectrum, I could even use a plan written by an MBA or an undergrad as
part of a school project. Will be curious as to how you do. I will doubt that
anyone big is going to disclose their BPlan to
someone. I'd call Waste Management's PR
Department in Houston and ask, they may laugh
at you but you have a better chance at getting
it from them versus anyone else, unless it has
already been released. Most BSchools would
be hard since Waste isn't exactly an MBA dream
to go into. In addition to writing to both groups
above, you might want to sign up to the VCish
websites that post business plans and then
hunt for waste related ones.
As far as acquisition targets, the waste business
has been rolled up pretty good and you can
see that most of them are busy integrated
what they have and/or getting out of Chapter 11
in some cases. One more thing I'd do is to call
up the CFOs or heads of M&A for your targets,
explain exactly what you want and why (if you
can) and see where they can point you.
I just talked to two of the largest players in this
market in the last month, one has 400,000 accounts.
Competing against someone like that will be
kind of hard unless you have some kind of edge.
Better to develop that edge and try to sell it
versus trying to (this is one of my favorite expressions
for what happened to KMart) "Out Wal-Mart Wal-Mart"
Last part of my pontification. Read the annual reports
and SEC filings for your two companies, find their
lenders and the analysts who follow those industries
and start from there. Looking forward to your researchers
answer, I have some similar stuff I'd like to track down,
curious to where to find it. Good luck!!!
I would like to request a refund for my Google Answers 157466 as I was
not satisfied with the results. I tried clarifying my request with
the person who responded so that I might find an actual business plan,
but instead the person forwarded me to documents (annual reports, SEC
filings) that I had already accessed before posting my question.
The person who answered did a good job, they just didn't find what I
was looking for. Thanks in advance for your consideration.
Hello there,
Practically every real waste management business plan available to the
public was written during the operation of the business.
Here are some business plans:
WasteCareSA Business Plan - Northern Alliance Incorporated

Greater Dandenong Waste Management Business Plan
http://www.greaterdandenong.com/upload/0203wastemanagement.pdf
Public Services Department Business Plan - 2 year plan
(this business plan contains more information than just waste
management but the sections are divided clearly)
http://www.publicservicesdepartment.gov.je/Information/Documents/R%202002-4%20BPfinalversion.rtf.doc
This business plan, written by department of energy, is for
radioactive waste management. However, it is very extensive and there
are many useful aspects of this business plan.

Hello,
I have found two actual business plans of waste management
projects/business but neither of them are residential. One of them is
for business units and the other is for radioactive waste management.
However, they are both extensive and are real plans. Would those
suffice as an answer?
Rob,
Have you looked at the SEC filings of these residential waste
management companies? They contain sections regarding competition,
market, market risks, economics, etc.
http://www.wasteconnections.com/secfilings.asp?action=submit&url=
http://www.wm.com/inv/subscriptions/reports.asp
Or are you looking for something different?
Tox-ga,
Thanks for your answer. However, this was not the type of information
I was looking for. I was looking for a business plan written by a
residential waste management company that contained the normal stuff
-- a competitor analysis, market sizing infomation within the U.S.,
5-year financials, the economics of delivering waste management
services, etc.
