Cynthia Sommer wanted it all – money, wild parties, casual sex, and big breasts. Unfortunately, she couldn’t make her dreams come true with her husband’s small salary. So she committed murder.
Sommer, 33, was recently sentenced to life imprisonment five years after poisoning 23-year-old Marine Sgt. Todd Sommer. The victim died of arsenic poisoning on Feb. 18, 2002, at their home on the Marine Corps Miramar base in San Diego.
“His death was initially ruled a heart attack. Tests of his liver later found levels of arsenic 1,020 times above normal,” according to the Associated Press (AP).
Although there was no direct evidence that the arsenic came from Cynthia, the accused was convicted mainly on circumstantial evidence after it was shown that she had a motive to kill her husband. “The Marines relatives testified that she objected when they asked her to put her husbands $250,000 death benefit in trust for herself, their baby, and her three children from a previous marriage. However, she later put a little more than half of the benefit into a trust,” AP said.
After Todd’s death, Sommer used part of the money for breast augmentation. She spent the rest to fulfill her fantasies.
“In addition to the breast enlargement surgery, Sommers friends and co-workers testified, she threw wild parties and had casual sex with multiple partners in the weeks after her husbands death and the payment of the insurance policy,” AP revealed.
She was finally arrested in 2005. By then, she was living in West Palm Beach, Florida and was engaged to a former Marine whom she met two months after Todd’s death.
Im deeply disappointed. I dont believe Cindy killed Todd,” defense attorney Robert Udell said after the verdict.
