Pratibha Parmer crosses all boundaries with her first feature-length charming semi-autobiographical narrative film Nina’s Heavenly Delights.
It’s the perfect Indian love story with the perfect blend of music, dance, food and, of course, love. But there is something that separates this story from the typical Bollywood flick—the love story is about two women—one Scottish, the other Indian. : Silva Screen Records - Soundtrack MP3s & CDs:: SILVA SCREEN RECORDS: 20 Years of outstanding Film & Television NINA_ S HEAVENLY DELIGHTS. Prior to this project, Pratibha had carved her niche as a renowned documentary filmmaker and self-described advocate for women’s rights and racial equity. Although Pratibha has shed light on some important social issues as a documentary filmmaker, she gets personal with Nina’s Heavenly Delights. The Kenyan-born resident of London remembers resisting her family’s pressure to get married via arranged marriage. And when she was in her twenties, she discovered that she was attracted to women.
“I fell in love with my partner when we were making curry,” Pratibha says with a bright smile as she begins describing her inspiration for the film. Pratibha’s partner was born in Pakistan and grew up in a family-run restaurant in London. In Nina’s Heavenly Delights, Nina falls in love with a woman in exactly the same fashion. “In Britain, there are more Indian restaurants than any other type of restaurants. Behind every restaurant is a story. I wanted to take one restaurant and go behind the scenes to make it come to life,” Pratibha explains. www.torrentreactor.to/torrents/search/Nina%C2%B4s heavenly delights:: href=http://www.torrentreactor.to/torrents/search/Nina%C2%B4s%20heavenly%20delights>www.torrentreactor.to/torrents/search/Nina%C2%B4s heavenly delightswww.torrentreactor.to/torrents/search/Nina%C2%B4s%20heavenly%20delights More pages from torrentreactor.to

In Nina’s Heavenly Delights, Nina’s family is brought together by the tragic loss of a multitalented man—a father, husband, talented chef and restaurant owner. After being estranged from her family for several years, Nina returns home to bid her father farewell. In the process, she decides to take up cooking to compete in a contest in an attempt to save her father’s restaurant. As it turns out, a whole lot more than curry is stirred up in the kitchen. Nina falls madly in love with her cooking partner, who happens to be a woman.
Not ironically, the film is centered around food. As Pratibha introduced her film to an eager audience at its July premiere at Outfest in Hollywood, California, she warned the audience: “I hope you’ve all come with full bellies. There is a lot of food!” She also jokingly mentioned, “If you were hoping for girl porn you might be disappointed, but there is food porn.”
Aside from love, the movie also explores secrets; everyone in Nina’s family has a secret—about love, about dance, about gambling, about life. Nina’s secret is that she is afraid to be true to herself. The film is about her journey to recognize her love for another woman. Nina’s family is imperfect and real and her lesbian relationship is just as complicated as any heterosexual one, so for mainstream viewers, the gender and sexual orientations of the individuals in love end up irrelevant. This is exactly what Pratibha hoped for. www.americola.com/sites/Nina%E2%80%99s_Heavenly_Delights:: Featuring comprehensive biographies and high resolution pictures and videos of nina’s_heavenly_delights. “Love is love across all kinds of boundaries, and I wanted people to see that,” she says. “I didn’t want to problematize or have an Indian lesbian who threw herself into a fire. Instead, I want people to leave the cinema and go eat Indian food and dance,” Pratibha continues. “It’s exposing and liberating. We are in the 21st century and things are changing. Showing different realities and different fantasies is really the only way to make change happen.”
For Pratibha, breaking boundaries in her film is part of a personal journey she’s been on for years. “I realized it really is not in my DNA to be someone other than who I am. The only way to do that is to be true and honest with myself,” Pratibha asserts. “It doesn’t have to be a problem if you are South Asian (and gay or lesbian). When I finally came out, I was embraced by my mother, and my fantasy is to have other Indian mothers be able to do the same thing.”
Although there were only a handful of South Asians mixed into the multicultural crowd at the Outfest, the broad-based, multicultural Los Angeles gay, lesbian and ally audience gave the film raving reviews.
“I thought it was an entertaining, feel-good movie with mass appeal. I liked that it was a love story blended in with a family story and featured an ethnic cast,” says 27-year-old Sandra Han.
UC Irvine film studies professor Marie Cartier, 51, also loved the film. “Her decision to shoot the Scottish Indian community and take the camera someplace new made the film extra charming,” Marie says. “I’m glad this film was featured at Outfest. I consider this the best gay community event in the area.”
Marie’s friend, Kimberly Esslinger, couldn’t help being inspired by the film. “I love the sweetness of the characters. I’ve decided that for the next two weeks, I’m only going to eat Indian food. The film reminded me what a magical way of connecting food can be,”
