Hi - I've got an illustrated map that I created for a client who will use it as a 3'x7' outdoor sign. I'm resizing it to design an interactive map, but I would love to see what folks think would be the best approach - taking advantage of Flash 8 Pro's new features, such as utilizing a progressive .jpg.
How would YOU display such a wide format, allow for a zoomable option and still maintain a nice clean, as-small-a-file-size-as-possible application?
Thanks!
Hi,
It sounds to me like a great problem for a Zoomify solution. Check out Zoomify at http://www.zoomify.com/flash/. I have experimented with this application with respect an image gallery. It would enable your client to quickly download a low resolution copy of your graphic and then allow the client to zoom into high resolution detail -- while still providing security against theft of your high resolution graphic. A jpg (I'd not use progressive as you can build a prelaoder in flash) is going to probably be the smallest vs vector if its really big - however, zooming on a jpg is going to give you soso results - make sure to set the smoothing on the jpg in the library, or there are tricky ways to set smoothing using the BitmapData class if loading the jpg externally - Might be best to use a hybrid, I've had a lot of success using a jpg background for a map, then using lot lines or roads as a vector overlay in flash. Hi & thanks for the suggestions. I have tried Zoomify and think it's an awesome application, I'll need to delve a little further into it as I see they now allow you create flash apps. with callouts & captions, etc. I like to add a bit of animation to my maps, and am not sure the zoomability factor will allow or account for that. However, still worth looking into.
The .jpg as a background with vector based roads, etc. could also be a way to lessen the file size. But for this particular project, all roads are in place already. I've considered slicing it up and optimizing each slice. Bitmap caching might also be an avenue, although I haven't had any experience with it as of yet. Any thoughts on whether that is a viable option? I'll be looking into it as well, but any insights are appreciated. Thanks again!
